Distance Learning & Education Program

 

Overview

California Spectrum Care’s Distance Learning & Education (DLE) is designed to offer support to individuals and their families who are currently unable to attend the G.R.O.W. Program due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Remaining home to ensure safety proposes challenges for everyone in the household as well as the continuation of the enrolled individual’s education. The goal of DLE is to continue the educational development of enrolled clients while also creating supports in the home to ensure success through these challenging times. The program consists of three components:

Caregiver Support & Reporting

Depending on the curriculum you or the individual you support engage in, you may be asked to give general descriptions or grade curriculum performance. For example, if your son or daughter could not explain the challenges they faced while completing the assignments of the week in detail, a staff member may ask for you to explain the challenges for them. Staff members may also recommend learning and behavioral modification strategies to increase the likelihood of success the following week. The amount of communication you are able to provide on a weekly basis is up to you. CSC recommends that you meet with a staff member via phone or facetime one to two times a week to briefly discuss how you and the individual you support are doing and performing with the curriculum. This is also a good time to request curriculum that meets specific skills or goals you would like to target in the home.

Curriculum Engagement & Distribution

Continuing with the current curriculum design, clients will either engage in a core, intermediate, or advanced curriculum workload. Although, the curriculum will be modified with tangible materials to compensate for the momentary lack of community-based learning. Each week a package will be sent to your home containing worksheets and other tools to engage in and complete the weeks lesson plan. Some materials will be reusable or used for multiple lessons and labeled as such. In addition to tangible curriculum, some clients who have access and the ability to use computers or mobile devices will engage in lessons distributed on Google Classroom. These assignments will be delivered and completed virtually without the need of a printer. All that is required is internet access and the ability to access a Gmail email account. Physical worksheets and assignments will be available for those who do not have access to computers. Please be aware that those who option for DLE programming will be completing a slightly different curriculum than those who attend the current modified facility-based programming to supplement the environmental element of being home.

Client Coaching

Each week the clients one-on-one staff member will contact the client or family (via phone or facetime) enrolled in DLE depending on client availability. This time is used to specifically speak with the client to discuss current topics, offer support to complete assignments, and generally support the individual through these challenging times.  Clients who are able to report their own grading and supports needed during assignments can do so at this time.

Scheduling & Staff Coaching

You will either be enrolled in the AM or PM session of the DLE program. Although you can work at your own pace and on your own schedule, the session time you are enrolled in will determine the hours you have CSC staff available to you via phone or facetime. Staff are available during specific office hours, detailed below:

Typical DLE Week – Example

Although client coaching is not scheduled for Tuesday or Thursday (below) the client has the ability to call and ask for support during dedicated staff office hours. This offers the client and caregiver schedule flexibility and the ability to carry out tasks as they normally would in their personal life without disruption.
